Casu Marzu
Otherwise known as Maggot Cheese.
It’s illegal to manufacture except for three dairy families in Italy. They cannot sell it, you can only obtain it from them as a gift from donating to their dairy farm.
Eating this particular cheese is highly dangerous because the maggots can and will jump into your eyes if you don’t cover your face while eating it.
How does it taste? Good news for you guys, I’ve eaten it before.
It’s mildly sweet and creamy, has a smoky bitter aftertaste and goes well with white wine.
The maggots add a bitter and creamy bite of protein. And here’s the fun part: the cheese constantly makes noise and there’s a hundred different little popping noises when you eat a piece of this cheese.
Smell wise, let’s just say you can smell it from a mile away and it does not smell good at all.
Overall it’s pretty decent, not for the faint of heart. Would I recommend it? lel no, most vomit from the smell of it.
