As someone who has a mute relative, its not too uncommon. Sometimes we just repeat back what they gesture as to make sure we are understanding them correctly. Its typical for beginners though. I know that I did it but not to this extent.
The thing that doesnt make sense that how did she learn sign language in the prequel unless all the classmates learnt it out of kindness to communicate with out MC. That would be a pretty japanese thing to do.
