I'm pretty sure that it would also inflict pain on him as he was breaching the slave contract because he was giving away master possession without permission. Tbh rules were not really explained so it's hard to tell. In case of master unconsciousness, a slave should do everything to save master, which would also mean making sure they stay in safe place and that would mean he could pay rent, food or anything else. But again, it's all coming as convenient plot tool to push Liam into certain place that author wants to show off, Liam being really powerless or something along these lines.
