From the Synopsis of the Novel itself:
Into a noble class that treats those born with white hair or heterochromia as treacherous snakes, Shirley was born into the family of the most powerful duke in the land adorned with stunning hair the colour of snow, and non-matching red and blue eyes.

Hated by her own family, and having the only man who ever loved snatched away by a jealous younger sister on her wedding night, she is imprisoned on false charges.

Enduring torture and humiliation, she vowed to gain my revenge against those who wronged her. But, even though she escaped, in her belly there was the child of her former fiancée.

Even if the man himself is hateful, an unborn child is without sin. After giving birth to healthy twins, I thought to leave them at an orphanage for safekeeping, but…

“Ah, what to do, my daughters are just too cute.”

Shirley was floored by the feelings she held for the two girls she had brought into the world. Choosing motherhood over revenge, she fled the Empire and settled in a remote town in a neighbouring Kingdom. In order to support her children, she found herself entering through the doors of the Adventurers Guild. It would be nice if we could live a nice quiet life out here, where the empire won’t think to look for us…

“Shirley-san! Calamity-class monsters are appearing in the Kingdom! Can you accept help us!?”

“I’m very sorry, but I have to decline. I’m helping my daughters with their homework today.”

After ten years, she had somehow become known the world over as “The Demonic White Sword”.

A lot of the above stuff is straight up given to us in the prologue and synopsis, but the manga obviously doesn't contain it.

Shirley wasn't always an immortal; she awoke that power through her intense work in order to get revenge. She wasn't that powerful when she was still in the Empire, though it is stated that she had her regenerative ability back then.
As far as Shirley is concerned, the only TRUE family she has/had was the children, the Emperor and Empress, her "sister" Princess Philia (they call and treat each other like actual siblings, unlike Shirley's real slutty sister Alice), and MAYBE Canaria the 1000 year witch (one of the other immortals). Hence, Shirley is immensely protective of the twins and refuses to go too far lest the Empire (or something/someone else) take them away.

Alice is a two-faced narcissistic slut with the uncanny ability to turn everyone she meets into moronic SIMPS, and she is SO HATEABLE that you'd think she's related to f*cking MALTY from RISING OF THE SHIELD HERO (and I don't make that comparison lightly)!
Shirley's ex-fiancee, Emperor @#$!@#$! (because he doesn't deserve to be properly named in this conversation!), is a massively hypocritical, pretentious **** that make you want to genuinely strangle him. Upon seeing Shirley's ageless beauty (in comparison to Alice's crusty, makeup-doused, wrinkley-middle-aged body) and the equivalent beauty of the twins, he immediately contemplates having Shirley become his mistress (as if he didn't completely ruin her life several times over!).

Philia's a brave, highly intelligent, morally-righteous lady that willing to "betray" her homeland by weakening it from within for both Shirley's sake and the sakes of the commoners. She's arguably one of the only Empire characters that you'll actually like.

Canaria the Golden Witch is an immortal foreign war hero from the Demon Kingdom as well as an infamous 'troll' (as in an internet troll) who is more than willing to abuse her power and status to toy with people and feed on their frustration and tears. It's absolutely hilarious reading about her and how she gives 0 f*cks to authorities or basically anyone besides Shirley and the twins.
Example:
--After Shirley BISECTS the Imperial Castle with a sword swing, Alice and the angry nobles start accusing Canaria of having done it. Canaria eggs them on with a "malicious grin" (trollface) and begins to brutally burn Alice with words.
"In any case, are you honestly Shirley’s younger sister? Your make up is going to peel off even more if you stay this vexed, hm~? … Are you truly not her much older sister, or perhaps her aunt? Even though she’s thirty, she’s a match for any teenage beauty, so why don’t you compare at all? Haa… Age truly is a cruel mistress, no?”
As she kept Shirley’s semi-immortality a secret, the thousand-year-old witch gleefully listened to the Empress’ angry yelling as she played on Alice’s complex about her looks and her deeply harboured jealousy for her older sister.

Begone annoying, creepy, and selfish receptionist! I don't care if this beautiful milf is quasi immortal or a literal god, what she does is no business of yours.

6 months late but I have to tell you, you exponentially increased my interest in this title, I haven't even seen the prince but I already hate him.

Thanks a lot for the info and spoilers!

You will absolutely hate him and Alice. He is a snobby, narcissistic asshole, the kind that acts like he's God's gift to man or something. Even though he already has her sister (who has begun to horrendously age due to how often she sleeps with other men), the disgusting bastard tries to get Shirley back, claiming that it would be an "honor" for her to be his concubine. (He still believes in Alice's lies about Shirley abusing her.)
HONOR MY ASS.
Shirley's possessive super-mom behavior at the "beginning" of the story seems pretty unreasonable and extreme to both the readers and to the people around her, but then you find out about the context of her abusive former fiancé the Emperor, Shirley's backstory with the Empire, and Malty #2. Everyone (more or less) unanimously then wants to protect her family, and the guild becomes far more reasonable and reluctant to split the family.
