I see it more as a "rough mentor" type of thing, I mean, after all, japanese media is horrendously cutthroat and ANYTHING can cause them to lose momentum and fall out of the public's favour.

He did slip badly enough that he had to get grounded so as to not be hounded by the media trying to capitalize on the scandal.
