There are huge time lapses. Basically the gal grows up with her cat which makes it really hard when her cat passes away. She mourns her cat for a while and for a while she gets sad when she is reminded of her cat. Then later on her heart is healed a bit and her significant other brings home a cat, which brings her good memories and also a new friend. More or less what happened.
