The Japanese sure have wildest assumptions about Americans(and Europeans)

If anything, it is a western person in Japan who'd be the one confused because of the excessively polite language that you're not supposed to take literally.
It's not different. Yes, in western mind, all japanese did is weird especially the culture.

In western, they race swap the character when go to adapt to Hollywood/Netflix.

There's a story about japan in western version. of all Japan famous samurai available, they pick nobunaga retainer that not a samurai and make it superman. And make it history accurate.

It make people think western are superior while it's equal.

Isn't it a 'thing' in japan that you have to say no to a gift three times before accepting it? must be frustrating for kids celebrating b-days

And i guess it depends on a youth but other than just telling someone ahead of time going on a date with a diff person the next week is a bit rude but i wonder how well 'mixers/goukon' would work here lol but i guess it'd be more of casual group hangouts or so versus the intention of finding a bf/gf

Long story short, she turned him down. My boy was a bit confused, wondering why she rejected him.
Then his friends explained that he was being too hasty. They say in Japan, you have to go through the steps according to the "rules". You know, there's valentines, Christmas, and all those events. And only then you can have your confession.

Might be ideal for someone 'demi' leaning although animanga wise other than being childhood friends or in the same friend group at school, by the time it's christmas and valentines ppl would already be dating or so, b/c asking someone out on V-day without like 'confessing' first def adds some pressure

I've heard a story of a westerner working in Japan thinking a female employee was hitting on him because she said something like "We should have a coffee sometime". Eventually someone explained to him that's basically japanese equivalent of "I look forward to working together".

And just when they think they understand it they run into implied sarcasm of the Kanai/Osaka dialect...

No lol. Or not in general at least. What's described in this chapter does not seem like appropriate behavior by the man.

Possibly adding to the confusion is that "dating" can separately refer to all three of an exclusive relationship, going on dates to find an exclusive relationship, and going on dates with no intention of ever having an exclusive relationship. In a healthy interaction, which one is being meant should be clearly understood by all parties. Of course we all know that doesn't always happen and I hear it's a frequent source of frustration for people who want one but get another.
Wait. Hold on. So she was basing off all men from this one foreign exchange experience? No. Can't be. There has to be more to her assumptions towards men.
She's not completely wrong though. This chapter is actually a good primer for a Japanese girl to read so they are less likely to misunderstand the casual date as a formal one, as Momoko did.
