It appears to be a repeating part of Strait's character that he's much more capable of stepping up when it's to help someone else. He doesn't seem to like himself very much so he needs external motivation to drive him forward but he seems to be pretty decent once he's got that.

If the author decided to be original it could be they lost their "free source of stuff" (ie. raiding/pillaging) when humans learned magic, unified or something the like (hence the talk about magicians taking their stuff, taking from humans and domination over the humans) but having read a bunch of manga it's gonna be the classic "Eviiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiil humans" 100%.
