JRPG logic
The joke is that it doesn't make sense in any way you look at it. Characters with low def do not take up tank positions. You'd normally want to boost the stats thst are already really good (agility, attack, magic) -- also, a shield and magic-attacks don't have anything in common. That bit is either poorly translated, or the author makes up goofy mechanics up his arse.

I think the author means that a magic caster with low defense stats would take up a shield to protect himself from attacks while casting spells in return.

Yeah, thanks Captain Obvious.

But have you played a JRPG before? Some of them are really quite strange.

Also, it's fairly common to give characters with low defense a shield to patch up their weakness, is it not? Or are you the type to ignore that?

I don't think of many RPGs where I'd put a shield on my low defense characters. Usually I'd ramp up their dex or their mp and have them in the back lines.

I don't get page 14. How did he think there is no way to get along from that? Huh?

Do you...?
A character with low def is usually designed to be squeeshy, like mage, archer, rogue, etc.
If they are not balanced for def, they usually are meant to dodge attacks, or just not expect to take any directly (skills to prevent dmg). Putting on a shield on such a character is a huge waste of equip-slots.

I'd agree with you except that such JRPGs exist where your chance to dodge an attack is directly tied to shield equips, so equipping a shield is basically just boosting the evasion stat, and thus is an entirely good usage of the equip slot (especially so if the game in question has no other means of avoiding an attack, and/or all weapons are one-handed on the classes that need evasion).

I don't think of many RPGs where I'd put a shield on my low defense characters. Usually I'd ramp up their dex or their mp and have them in the back lines.
That depends on the game, so I'd wager we just have different experiences I suppose.

Huh, not what I was expecting when I glanced ahead at the raw.

Turns out the the cat is actually the shield itself or at least transforms herself into one, or perhaps that is the "different power" that is unlike that from the game version since it looks like the cat becomes soul-bound or something to him through the shield.

I've got this terrible feeling that it's one of those series that will run for exactly one volume and then will just tell us to fuck off and go read the novel.

I feel like it is kinda meh. Feels like it had some potential but feels a little off.

This looks great! Thanks so much for picking it up. Looking forward to seeing how he develops his talent with the shield.

Huh. An OP shield and possibly a demon cat/lion/whatever familiar? Those would be interesting editions to the storyline.

Rise of the Shield Villain!

I guess I can understand equipping Peach with the Lazy Shell-type strats.

Well, maybe this boss has some special exploit option to it.

The protagonist is a complete idiot. He condemns other people for their desire for power, yet he himself obtains the same thing in the same way, justifying it with his simp mindset.

Mm... I'm not sure I want to read this one. No offense to the translation team! You all have done great work! It's just, I'm not sure this is my kind of story.
Best blessings on this project!
