He didn't want to 'marry' under the current system, where a spirit would be below the human, but rather have a new one created, where the two sides would be equal partners. That's a promise for a happy future. Possibly shake things up in the world, even.

It's borderline savior complex. Made even more frustrating by the fact that he's still worshiped and they hear all that and just get more devoted to him. I kinda hate this. The author could just write a simple power fantasy. The circular logic trying to create a world where the MC is simultaneously a super duper mega ultra kind person that's also a civil rights activist and yet naturally worshipped like he's above everyone is just kinda disgusting. This is like if MLK Jr. did everything he did, but also had a harem that was devoted to him like slaves and said he'd treat them like equals but they never did anything but worship him like a god. Actually it'd be like if he did everything he did, but that needed to include explaining the basic concept of freewill and equality while Black people just looked on confused, but also in this setting Black people have super powers, give everyone else their powers, and apparently created humanity on the whole. This story is going way too far while trying to have its cake, eat it too, and messily shove that cake all over it's body to turn on the people looking for a harem power fantasy.
