Hi there. No it's not just you. I also needed someone else to explain it to me.

What the real mushishi saw at the end was what the mushi actually looked like, so what the fake mushishi saw were his hallucinations.

Oh this is beautiful. What a harsh, fantastic exploration of a facet of this series' setting. Like. Of course you could get 'fraud' mushishi. You got/get fraud doctors IRL all the time. And I like it touching on how being a wanderer is a very insecure position, too. Just the kind of thing I love to see be explored.
