People who read the novel: do the books do a better job of explaining why she is jumping from point to point?

She’s clearly looking for an escape, or to be rescued. Valid! But she herself states that she’s going in circles. That she keeps ending up in the “safe” zone, and then from there, the Monster Den (I’m getting Mystery Dungeon PTSD here).

It just doesn’t seem like a sound strategy. She mentions she can gather food and water with mana, and can rest to recover said mana. But also she’s slowly… not recovering?

Basically, it reads like she’s running in a loop, slowly losing her stamina. But I don’t know why she’s losing her stamina when she can rest, drink, and eat, and I don’t know why she’s running in a loop when she knows it’s a loop.

I haven't read the novels, but it felt to me that she wasn't moving in circles but that every route leads to and from the same place.
For the stamina thing, her rest is fundamentally not going to be very high quality because of the situation and both the food and water use energy to get. I feel it can be reasonably assumed that she's able to keep herself alive with magic but that using magic has a higher usage cost compared to the recovery from rest, eating, and drinking.

@Gogglesluxio

As a demon, Roxy is used to eating substandardfood and living in harsh conditions. However a month or more diet nothing but monster meat is causing malnutrition and sapping her stamina. She keeps running the loop on the off chance to finding an exit, but also to restock on her supply of food.

so... I guess they went with a much tamer depiction of this scene, instead of the book's far more detailed description of what was happening to Roxy through out the time it took to rescue her.

Fair enough. The author tends to have a fairly grounded view of magic and situations, so I assumed there was a solid reason. I think it’s just an issue of the manga not doing a great job of explaining itself.

Now, to be fair, it doesn’t really need to. The point of the story is just A: she’s still alive and B: she’s about to die when Rudy gets there. That’s all the storyline is aiming for. It just caught me a little off-guard since this story is normally more detail-oriented.

Think the author just assumes we would understand. I mean we spent a whole arc or three in the wastelands where most of the demon tribes call home. So we know the kind of conditions they live in, and that Roxy is used to a rough life, living on little to nothing.

So being told she only has monster meat and conjured water for sustenance just naturally leeds me to malnutrition as the cause of her health issues. Or viewed another way, the author is telling you to eat your veggies, because chickynuggies and chips just isn't going to be enough.

Id say another large factory is mental exhaustion. The monsters are getting smarter and all her attempts to escape have failed to lead anywhere. Going in circles without any idea if there is even an escape route and if rescue is even coming. Shes reaching the end of her rope mentally after a month of high stress combat and extremely low quality living conditions. She has to rely on magic to sustain herself so shes constantly suffering from mana exhaustion too which is probably negatively affecting her mental.

I could certainly see that happening, though I'm hesitant to apply human parameters to Roxy's emotional and physical states. Especially when taking the environment she was raised in into consideration.

While its always possible she has gone soft after living amongst humans for decades, I like to believe she is made of sterner stuff, and it was only the forced protein only diet that caused her to falter.
