This is another type of dessert that has fallen out of favor - I can remember Mom making these a couple of times in the '80's, but you don't see them much today, at least in the US.
The most common (?) variety is the pineapple upside-down cake, where pineapple rings are placed at the bottom of the cake pan, and the batter is poured in over the top of them. Once the cake has baked, it's removed by flipping the pan, putting the pineapple on top, and usually maraschino cherries and a glaze are added. (Should not be confused with a pineapple upside-down pie, which is what you end up with if you put me within reach of a pineapple pizza. I will flip that shit directly onto the floor where it belongs.)
There are other varieties; almost all are some kind of fruit. Pear, strawberry, and orange are pictured.
