Like, hello? 4 is a rounding error at this level of scale. You should've expected four casualties on a successful mission, and instead you're bemoaning it as a serious loss on a suicide one. The emperor should be laughing him out of the room, regardless of his accomplishments.

You're conflating his words to the Emperor with those to the Zichtburg. Things will make more sense if you stop.

4 might be a rounding error, but it only is if we are talking about statistics. That is, stripping away our humanity and consider personnels as mere "human resources".

In this situation, however, he was talking to the new Duke on a personal level. They were talking about honour and tragedy. 4 girls who died are 4 too many, especially if the main responsibility lied on the Duke's father. So I don't think him mentioning that would be inappropriate. The brigade could have been wiped out and the MC could not have stood there to protect the fallen Duke's honour.

They seem to be correct. Duchess Ritreille said the expedition had 62,000 soldiers and roughly 20,000 returned. The protagonist corrected the total number to 50,000 but didn’t correct the number of survivors. So the losses do indeed seem to have been 30,000 soldiers.
