I dont think the author thought through the implications of making the world 1:5 gender ratio because of dungeons...
That means that more than 4/5 of all men die in or because of dungeons and at a young age at that to make the conversation make sense.

I think the author meant to say that, when the Dungeons started to appear, it somehow affected the birth rate of Females and increased it to "1 : 5" (for comparison, current global male & female gender ratio by birthrate is something like "1.05 : 1").

It just meant that, for every 100 girls born, only 20 boys are born in comparison.

It didn't say that the death rate of men increased, as both men & women die with equal chance inside a dungeon.

Maybe, was just pretty poorly explained, and the most natural explanation would be the men dying. Changing birth rates are something much stranger. Withithout that beeing stated as being the case i dont think you could reasonably expect people coming to the conclusion that dungeons severly affected birth rates.
