To be fair to Ayako's mom, women in Japan have it incredibly rough when it comes to working with kids. It is so common for women who get pregnant to be bullied, demoted, or even outright fired when they get pregnant (despite laws prohibiting those things) that there's an actual term for it (maternity harassment); employers basically view them as unreliable, because they'll put their kid before the company, and can't put in the same hours everyone else is expected to maintain (aka, ruining their health). Plus, maternity leave means having to pay for an employee who's not actually working.

Ayako may not have been given birth to Miu, but adopting her still could have ruined her life if her boss wasn't who she is, so her mother wasn't wrong to be hesitant about the idea.
