It's not exactly a big corporation taking over. I'm not sure what the exact relationship is, but I know that donations to MangaDex go through NamiComi, which as far as I can tell is a site where people can self-publish webcomics—the "Self-Published" section on the front page are all titles self-published through NamiComi. This is just plain stupid, this is why we shouldn't let big corporations taking over our safe space
To kinda second this I do read some Namicomics through Mangadex and I like them. I dont mind stuff being upload from another site at all. It's not exactly a big corporation taking over. It's free to read. Literally the only hang up is needing to log-in to turn off the age restriction.
The relationship is that the former founder (Hologfx) is the CEO of NamiComi (Henry Lin), which indeed is a corporation, based in New York on top of that. That's the "going legit" scheme they've been (incompetently) cooking up over the years. The point of this site is to leverage the user base for said business, nothing more. It's not exactly a big corporation taking over. Is there something to be wary of regarding NamiComi? I haven't read too much through it yet, but I haven't run into paywalls or needing a subscription or anything. (Unless being a MangaDex supporter counts, which would explain things if so.) Or, like, are there problems from the authors' end of things? The relationship is that the former founder (Hologfx) is the CEO of NamiComi (Henry Lin), which indeed is a corporation, based in New York on top of that. Takedown will be awkward for this one. Uploader is the author themself. Is there something to be wary of regarding NamiComi? People in this thread are reacting like they won't be able to read this anymore, but I don't think people need to worry about NamiComi sending a DMCA takedown to titles on MangaDex.
Besides the ususal impending enshittification (once they get to a scale that satisfies them), the business model pretty much means there is no future for MD. They want to siphon as much users to the "legit" business as possible and will leave the rest to rot, since they can't be connected to this in any longterm way - their reaction to the most remote threat of lawsuits should tell you why. Of course, that's assuming they'll even get a chance, since the en masse abandon ship movement from scanlation groups might just beat the to it.Is there something to be wary of regarding NamiComi? Twisoh Comics is owned by Senukin, so it looks like the author is the one who uploaded it.The bigger question from me is: who uploaded this to NamiComi, and why? (And why only the first two chapters?) Senukin, the mangaka, is who uploads these officially to Mangadex, as far as I can tell. Did he also add the first two chapters to NamiComi? If so, that's his decision and I think everyone should respect it, since he's self-published and can choose to put his work wherever he wants. If someone else did, then that opens them up to legal action, as they are not the copyright owner.
Time to bail.![]()
Mangadex sold my data to NamiComi and they can't even sync my profil to their website.![]()
If you were to follow Senukin's patreon... You would know he finally made himself his own company, and so I believe because of that now he's self-publishing through namicomi and having it be uploaded to MD as a bonus. The bigger question from me is: who uploaded this to NamiComi, and why? Oh cool! Thank you for the explanation that makes a lot more sense lolIf you were to follow Senukin's patreon... You would know he finally made himself his own company, and so I believe because of that now he's self-publishing through namicomi and having it be uploaded to MD as a bonus.
