Say, if the original ji Tiandao used the system to become as wealthy and powerful as he was, how did he end up with negative a million merit? I mean, those items he had were probably really expensive, so he had to have earned merit the normal way at some point, right? He had tons of heavenly weapons as well as a mount. Surely those alone would have been hundreds of thousands merit points. There is also the fact that he could have given himself eternal youth by simply buying lifespan through merit, and yet instead he ended up weakened and decrepit. How? The lifespan issue alone should have been enough for him to desperately prevent his merit going into the negatives.

The only way I can think of that could have made this happen is that a rather large, singular event hundreds of years ago (meaning, long before he would even consider the lifespan cards as something important) gave him a massive, near irrecoverable amount of negative merit, locking him out of the system rewards. After that he simply gave up on trying to earn merit altogether, which compounded the issue as his wanton killing would put him even further into the negatives. By the time he became old and decrepit and no longer had the strength to keep his position, it was already to late to reverse the problem.
