What disappointed me is that we hear about Gojou making Hina dolls that are popular, but never get to see them in this timeskip. Marin seems to still be cosplaying, but we only see one photo of her modeling for some ad.
It's not a terrible ending, but it's by no means a satisfying one.

Hopefully we get to see a bit more of their adult life in the side stories. But with the author having said that there will be some side story, I guess that where it will truly end. No continuation in another manga. Unless maybe in a few years they'll get inspired to continue? One can hope, but I really don't see that happening. Hopefully we get 3-5 side stories. I'm not a fan of having like 50 chapters of side stories like some Korean webtoons do.
And I do hope one of the side stories is about Haniel (I think that was her name, the angel in the story) and a movie/series starring Marin.

I suppose, reading through these comments, I get why the author would wrap it all up suddenly even if her health wasn't an issue.

This was a cosplay/doll manga about two passionate people supporting each other, at its core. The romance was always a B plot. I buy the volumes, I read all the author notes about all the dedicated research put into all the hobby subject matter. The long struggle about the correct material and the pitfalls of perfectionism were all part of that.

But all I'm reading is people upset about all the boring cosplay stuff getting in the way of the romance and that makes me sad.

"Not outstaying it's welcome" when the most recent arcs had set up a multitude of plot threads (StormSen made a pretty good list several pages back). It was just amping up again for something big.

My disappointment is complicated. I'm sad it's over so suddenly, I don't expect the epilogue will really do much to change that.

TL;DR It's a shame the hobby manga ended like the romance was the focus all along.
You're missing the forest for the trees.
The manga isn't strictly about cosplay, it's about the relationship between people using cosplay as a medium. And those relationships include romance.

And people aren't upset about the cosplay being a focus, they are upset about the absolute glacial pace that the manga started in around the time of the nun arc + that arc being extremely lame and taking massive momentum out of the series and characters we cared about (it was just an L arc) + plot points not getting resolved because the author decided on a premature ending mostly likely because she couldn't keep up the pace and would take another 7 years to write 5 volumes and properly finish it.

The pacing is what killed it, it just became atrocious.

TBH, it's not only romance stuff. Early episodes are very different from later ones. After Fukuda kicked out her Editors (AFAIK) and started doing things she wanted - cosplay and everything related it changed, yes. And some people were upset. But some of it was true, like Coffin arc wasn't very good (even if Juju personal story was good, IMO). And after single "weaker" ark she decided to just wrap it up? Because everything after that feels rushed, Haniel cosplay was good, but it was probably had in mind for a long time as a part of bigger story ark (which is obvious).

So, some people were upset and a single arc was on the weaker side and it was enough for Fukuda to stop caring about story? Not very nice for all the fans who would gladly read more of it for a long time.

Romance was supposed to be a subplot. Yes, it should be a part of relationship, but there were no need to force it. Some people may say it's too slow and leave, but they can go and read whatever romance piece that suits them. But if you want to read about cosplay you only other choice is 2.5D seduction. Not much. So i see no reason to force everything to end like because some people were unhappy.

Well, with circumstances what they are, I'm satisfied with the ending. I'd like to see more, especially with the other characters, so I'll hope the epilogue and side stories touch on that.

Probably feels different for people who followed it for 7 years and didn't just pick it up in january and blitz through it, I guess.

I'm fascinated that there are still people defending this with "It's not a romance story, it's a cosplay story!" when:

A) The title refers to both romance and cosplay equally.
B) The final chapter was focused entirely on romance.
C) The quality of the cosplay-focus dipped just as much as the quality of the romance focus. (This is the part that I really don't get -- defending the poor romance quality because it's about cosplay would make sense if the cosplay quality was actually good, but it also became significantly worse starting with the nun arc, with the author resorting to endless chapters about 'what sort of black cloth should I use?' instead of providing regular insights into cosplay techniques and culture.)

It's crazy how such a super-popular manga really only was good for the first third of the story.

We all reach a breaking point with things eventually, where we want to stop because it's overwhelming, and in those moments it's important to have the support around to help you work through it before you make a potentially regrettable decision.

So yes, there's every chance that the feedback from one weak arc was enough to wrap it up because she's fired all her editors and nobody was talking her off this ledge.

I desperately hope that isn't the case though.

Yeah, Japanese manga has a way to dig deep into a profession in a captivating way. The fortunate and unfortunate part is the manga hit it big due to the female main lead causing the readers to have a much higher than intented expectations on the romance content and it's proportion. The author has always voice he wanted to show more cosplay profession content without adding in typical romance cliche like romance rival and multiple romance interest to focus on cosplay and Hina doll. This does means there will be more profession content vs romance, which might not have sit well with the romance focus readers. The situation got even worse once it shift to monthly release making this feels a lot slower in pacing. At the cosplay content heavy Hannabal fallen angel arc, the negative popularity likely discouraged the author that lead to the abrupt kiss at the door ( I would be lying though if I say that scene wasn't awesome) and decision to wrapped up the manga on a high note. It is quite evident the original plan was to dive into the conflict of cosplayer's popularity and relationship of cosplayer and cosplayer costume/props creator. All in all, I understand the decision of the author. But i only wish the author and publisher had a little more faith in themselves and the other readers who loves the profession content of cosplay and Hina dolls. ( I bought all the books starting from volume 1 btw)

I’m so surprised it ended abruptly but the arc prior was so dragged out that it made me lose interest yet I came back to see how it all ended. A time skip is fine just wish it was some romance included in that besides a glance at the ring but hey! It’s over now lol

Look I don't think anyone is pointing fingers for the manga's end. I think the point they are making is It's not so much about this not being a romance manga but more like it is about the expectation of romance proportion. At this point, it is evident that the proportion of cosplay vs romance content is quite different from that some readers expected. While I do agree that the author has less quality on the cosplay content at nun arc, the slow pace of romance and less romance proportion has always been voiced after the school contest arc. There is a reason the author fired his editor as he is trying to shift the focus to more cosplay heavy arc and trying to find a balance. In latter arc, u can also see more focus onto the the detail of cosplay props and costumes like reflective surface, clothing cloth lightning and so fore, which might be too heavy for other readers. on hindsight, the attempt obviously didn't work out and it kinda spiral downwards from there. All in all it is hard when your manga took off on romance of an attractive lead FMC and realigned the expectation of reader to the other contents he want to present. We have seen charismatic character overtook an actor or other art presentation and buried everything else the artist has to offer ( captain Jack Sparrow for example). So I can kinda sympthatize (I do love the Hannibal arc despite the slow release).

I haven’t been keeping up with this, just occasionally peeking at a chapter or the comments, but this feels like an abrupt ending? Well at least I can binge now

Overall I'm actually fine with this ending, except for one thing.
WHY DIDN'T THEY SHOW THE DAMN HINA DOLL? They tease that he makes a doll unlike what people are used to, but don't show in what way. Really?
They could've finished it by showing a doll based on Marin and it would've been a perfect closer as everything would come full circle, but this? That's just blue balling on another level.

it just... ended
wtf this feels even worse than i thought

with some other shit endings like Shingeki's or OshiNoKo's at least they were so bad and insulting that there was room to discuss it and a variety of discussion points

this is just fine, people that dont like it still will think its just fine and people that liked it will probably say its just fine

that side story and epilogue have to be omega peam to fix this... its so weak

I feel devastated. Idk what happened but it's like looking at the parent murdering it's own child - such and abrupt ending out nowhere with almost 2 years of plot lines that went nowhere... Feels like i've wasted seven years of my life reading it and been betrayed.
Yeah, F that, what a waste of great manga, what a waste of my time. At least author could've give us explanation what the hell happened - if it is health issue - take a break, change schedule for quarter release - many authors do that. Damn, i read a lot of female author manga, who took maternity leave for years and they still continue. Readers can undesestand all. But not that crap "i suddenly decided just to axe my manga". This ending literally worse than any axed after 20-30 chapters manga ending on Jump+, lmao.
