Well I suppose I was half-right about the drugs? Also it’s crazy how much blanket hatred there is for the chief. Obviously she is trying to force her career choice on her daughter, but that does not mean she doesn’t care about her. It is precisely because she cares that she was willing to endanger herself to help restore Qin Yu’s magic core. She is overbearing absolutely, and thinks she knows better as most parents would, but it’s not like she’s any less stubborn than Qin Yu herself is. Don’t forget, half of the reason things got to this point is because rather than have the conversations they are having now, Qin Yu chose to destroy her core and run away instead. Characters having flaws is a good thing, it makes the stories more interesting and gives them room to grow. I think now that everyone is talking like adults hopefully we’ll get to see more of that. Personally I’m looking forward to Ya Ge and mom interacting from here on.

A character having flaws is a good thing sure, it is not an excuse that shields them from criticism. Her mother is blatantly both racist and a human supremacist with no reason to be given everything we have seen of their time is peaceful (minus Xing Lan's treatment from the village which would absolutely fall under her responsibility as negligence given that happened for decades and we know witches went there to redo the barrier regularly so how is no one noticing...). Hell ironically Anderson, who not only was alive during the war witch-vampire war but personally met the child of their queen (Maria), has every reason to be that instead and yet is constantly fighting her over her racist supremacist shitty authoritative world view. A flawed character is a better written character sure, but does not mean said character is forbidden from being called out as a dick

Caring about your kid doesn't make you a good parent. It certainly helps and gives you a path to becoming a better parent if you're currently a bad one, but it hardly excuses you from criticism for being a bad parent.

And, like, her being a bad parent is interesting and good for the story, but also is one of several reasons to not like her and think she's a bad person.

Something else I’m not entirely sure of, while she is definitely a human supremacist as you say, I’m not entirely sure what her (or even this world’s) definition of “monster” even is? Because I think most of us would consider both a vampire and a werewolf to be a monster in the traditional sense, and yet she says herself in this chapter that “at least [Ya Ge’s] not some monster”, and Maria is essentially free roaming as well after being confirmed to be non threatening. I’m not sure if this is translation jank, or if it could be that “monster” doesn’t even refer to any of the even vaguely humanoid beings we’ve seen thus far. It could also be somewhere in the middle, eg minotaurs could be but Maria and co aren’t.

I agree that people are writing her off as irredeemable too quickly, but I think saying they can not like her at all based on first impressions (Which lets be honest she had never stopped doubling down on until Anderson strongarmed her) is a bit narrow as well

When used by itself not as short hand for jiugwaai it can sometimes mean something that is corrupted. The second word 魔 (mo) here instead is the buddist word meaning demon, devil, monster, or just something that is pure evil no good to be had in starch contrast to the taoist view of amorality. Combined these two create the new word jiugwaai meaning an evil ghost or monster.

In the second half it is the words 鬼 (gwai) which means many many negative things (including being short for a racist word for white people), but here it yet another way to refer to a paranormal being, but this time explicitly in a negative sense (it is also used as a translation for "devil" into chinese for chinese christians). It is also the japanese word for a physical monster called the oni. Hey thanks a bunch for the detailed explanation, that is much appreciated! It does seem then that while the chief is definitely specist against non-humans, the definition of human does extend a bit farther than just 100% biological humans. Still something I think everyone would like to see her properly confronted on regardless, as we’ve seen plenty of monsters be good people at the bar and apartment complex etc.

I don’t know where this is ultimately going, but I think it’s fair to say that the witches need some sort of an advisory role or board, which I think Qin Yu could fit nicely into, having more contact with the outside world on a ground level than it seems the others do. I think there’s a good chance that the chief’s biases are born from being the workaholic that she is; if she spends all her time either on assignment rounding up problematic monsters or sending others out to do the same, of course she’s going to start thinking they’re all no good. I could be off base of course, maybe she was like this from the start, but she probably needs to take a page out of Andersen’s book and get out more so she can actually be confronted on how wrong she is.

While the specifics of this wasn't there in the translation for al the reasons you gave, this distinction is readable from context, especially that she was distinguishing between someone like Yage and someone like Maria when saying "monster". It is helpful to know all this, tho.
