I dont get why Caleb would say such things. I guess everyone was just taking advantage of Mihail before and he had no clue? Because its as if he did something for everybody. Or maybe they are just really glad because they think hes rich. Also maybe Calebs dad was an important figure in the village and now that hes gone things have went downhill for everyone.
