She's egotistical as hell. And really? Such tragic background for the father without any hints...

@Tikibo maybe I'm wrong but about hint, back in chapter 32, when the monk said "perhabs he was able to forgiven his parents", I think that's the hint....

"Please don't make Mai miserable like this", "you cannot make a child happy"
Maybe I'm wrong but.. if anything make Mai unhappy, it's her running away and leave Mai behind. Mai's dad maybe a slob like what he admit about himself, but at least he still there to care about his daughter ( well, although we can say it's Mai taking care of him)
And to think she doesn't choose gift for her daughter by her ownself ( pg.3 "were all of those frilly dress from mom picked by you), and now she want Mai come to live with her and a completely stranger man ??
Please forgive my english

@Gackt1 You are remembering correctly, Ch 32 revealed he did not have a good or healthy relationship with his parents. First just implied by his flippant attitude toward the family grave: not even bothering to bring his own incense or an offering, literally standing on it and spitting watermelon seeds on it, and by simply having never taken Mai to it until then. The monk told Mai in private not to dig up her father's past too much as it's not anything someone would want to reminisce about and he's happier living in the present with her. Two panels in the chapter depict him as a kid, covered in scuffs and bruises- the one that began the chapter mostly shows just a typical rough and tumble kid playing in the mountains but the second one at the end of the chapter changes the context by implying he spent a lot time in the temple taking refuge from domestic abuse. The last strip of the chapter ended on the train back home; with him asking Mai if she wanted to know, but she replied by asking if he wanted to tell- they dropped the subject to get snacks from the refreshment cart coming by. So yes this did not come out of nowhere, it was brought up a lot earlier in the story but is deliberately not pursued because the only other person privy to it said to just leave the past in the past. It's coming up again now as the reveal for her mother's motivations for both starting and ending her relationship with him
