I did the same thing with my younger sister. I wonder if the older sister is just lying to herself so the younger one won't feel bad about going away/getting a higher education

It’s sad that the older sister has pretty much given up on herself 😢. I hope in the future she can gain more self confidence and find something that she passionate about to achieve.
Also, I feel bad for the younger sister because she probably feels some guilt that she’d “taking“ all her sister chances of having a good future. Though it’s not her fault and the father should be extremely more proactive in his daughters lives.

@faniki, the issue here is that the younger sister has actually done everything necessary so that she can go to a faraway school without making it seem as if she wants to get away from her family, hence the public/private university distinction, public schools are hard to get into, but significantly less expensive and the little sister is well-equipped to get get into one bc she's already going to a top-tier high school. so when her sister emphasizes that she herself isn't going to college so her little sis can commute to a more expensive and less prestigious private school it just seems as if she's trying to undermine her siblings attempt at independence in order to prolong their dynamic

@blurgh123 yeah. Toudai's one of the ones you see people aim for in anime/manga and I think generally considered the best in the country.

Idk how I feel about this whole situation. Big sis is clearly ruining herself, hating her mom while becoming exactly like her, which is causing her younger sister to hate her. Even her language is sounding controlling parent, with her talking over her and the whole 'do what you want, don't worry about your dad and me'.

This is honestly a super suffocating manga...

I can understand how each of the sisters feel. The older sister feel like she's beneath her little sister because of her low grades and social life. The little sister is just tired of the toxic one-upping/jealous behavior within the family and just want to run away from it all. The mother was most definitely raised in that sort of environment thus she passed it onto her daughters. A cycle of abuse/toxicity, you can unfortunately see it in a lot of different families in the real world. Those two really need to sit down and just talk and admit their jealousy and yeah. I can see two ending to this, the cycle of abuse/toxicity continues to the next generation or they finally sit down and just talk. Therapy is definitely needed to fix the over jealous behavior even after the acknowledge each other's perspectives.

There must be something I'm missing here, because that last bit from the older sister sounded like a veiled threat. Maybe she'll demand some sort of "payment" in exchange for letting her go off on her own? Or try to guilt trip her? There's no way it's to show that the older sister has some sympathy in her unlike her mother, because of the last shot with the mirror showing her back.

Yow, the toxicity! I'm most sympathetic to the younger sister. Her instinct to flee is a healthy one.
