He's a Gashadokuro, so technically he's many spirits. They're formed from the amassed bones and resentment of people who died in battle or of starvation and never received proper burials; he mentions the containing multitudes in one of the flashback scenes when he says he's tired of having all these memories of families, and not knowing which one is his.
