Right, being a top of the class is not for yourself but for the expectations of others from you, glad that I'm just your regular slacker.

@BananowyJE I like trains too, but I prefer tram on a colder day. Also did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise?

Well that was... oddly sensible. Makes you wonder why exactly didn't she ever give it any thought before.

Isn't the standard, in Japan, is so high that it's one of the reasons why a lot of people commit suicide there? I do remember that academic stress is one of the reasons for it.

Her parents don't seem strict, in fact they seem worried that she is stressing out. There must be more to her compulsion to stay at the top. I wonder if it has something to do with knowing her brother is adopted and something to do with her brother's real parents

@HOOfan_1 If that were the case, I would consider it bad story telling, since nothing like that has been hinted at in the flash backs.
In fact I don't consider the shown reason that strange. She started to study to impress her brother (and family). But with her shutting out all connections to her brother, she doesn't have anything else to proove her worth. In her own eyes being the best in her year is her character trait. If she would loose that, she would loose her own self worth, since she shut out her own family and also doesn't seem to have friends (because she is studying all the time...). But now that she has re-established a connection with her family again, being the best isn't the only thing driving her anymore.

I understand what she's saying. If you suddenly drop, people will start talking about your failures.

A solution to this is to move to a different school.
