Interesting, isn't it? We have this narrative of rationality and enlightenment that will eventually lift people out of superstition and myth. And while fewer young people stay with organized religion (at least this is true in Western countries, idk about other places) spirituality is rising. Think of all the people burning sage or stocking up on crystals or obsessing with astrology.

I think the lesson is, as Bruno Latour wrote, We have never been modern. It is not our nature to be emotionless and logical. Rather, we take the bits and pieces of incomplete knowledge and we invent meaning to explain it. Modernism/rationality has it backward. We don't take input from reality to understand it, we apply understanding to reality as an act of creation.

Wow, what a coincidence. We have a book club at work that meets once a month, and We have never been modern came up as a suggestion last week for next month's discussion.
