Never understood the fortune seeking culture in areas like Japan and China. Anyone has an insight on how it is a thing?

It makes more sense if you actually have some belief in it....

It doesn't make sense to people who often don't believe in it because we humans are bad at understanding others...

But basically, the idea is that it predicts if you will have blessed luck or cursed luck.... now, it doesn't mean things will go right if you have good luck, but that things would be worse if you have bad luck....

And if you do have bad luck, you have the priest kinda bless it away to protect you from the evil ruining your luck.....

Basically, life is life, but external spiritual forces can make it worse and you gotta protect yourself...

Though it also works as a placebo as well (and it's proven that even if you know something is a placebo, if you still believe it could help, it can help) and a better mentality actually does make life better.... so it's still useful.

Cause humans are weird like that.

It probably dates back to the shaman era, when shamans relied on ritualistic methods to predict the tribe's future and decided what to do based on that. In the later era, religion also played a role, as some religions they do believe in fortune-telling while others didn't. It is also to be noted that the ruler of Japan/China in the past era used this mysticism to rule the country. Asian culture has many of these kinds of rituals, even my home country also has them. The Chinese and Japanese are keeping their traditional beliefs very well they survive to this day compared to Western countries which probably throws them away in favor of pure modern globalism/science without traditional religions/faiths.
