I know about Ren, but the manga says that there were a brother and sister, and the sis died first (page 20).
That was just one of the regrets that forms our protagonist. It could even be him when he was alive. But the little sister in that memory is not Oto-chan.

That's contradictory. It clearly says he's fake and we saw the other boy who helped Kuzunoha, and whose sister is she then?
There are three components that made up MC:
  1. The nameless boy died during the war with regret of unable to save his sister (not Oto). Fox-mask is probably his actual ghost, and is the provider of "memories" which defined MC's personality, motivation, etc.
  2. The thought of regret itself condensed into a shapeless, egoless curiosity floating around the space between worlds. This is MC's "body", separate from the fox-mask ghost.
  3. When Oto was lost, she desperately cried out to her brother Ren-nii (who is probably still alive in her original world), and this action resonated with the curiosity to form his "shape" -- based on how Oto remembered her brother (therefore not entirely accurate as the real Ren).

This is what the old man from previous chapter asked. The focal point where MC first manifested is around Oto. Once she returns home, or when she becomes independent enough to no longer need her brother's chaperone (which is already happening), he'll lose his "shape" and regress back to a mere egoless curiosity.

By now he could barely maintained it using cursed objects (+ connections with other people), but given the original purpose of collecting them was to help Oto return home, I guess his intention is using them as catalyst to form a path or a door, at the same time unravel the binding force that keep himself in shape.

I think MC will become a oddity of bonds instead of just regret or " a need of a brother ". He can sustained from the bond of him with Sumireko is a proof that he is not too depend on the bond of brother-sister anymore.

That is kind of sick if the author want to make MC developed with this direction. Meaning as long as there are people who has a bond with him then he can survive, kinda immortality at this point.

While I agree with some of your points, if all became true, then is becoming really twisty a la Ace Attorney haha :meguupog:

....did the anime actually spoil the ending of this series all along?
I think it might’ve been an anime-original ending because it’s unlikely there will be a season 2, so they added that to help tie everything together.

For those who didn’t watch the anime, it diverged shortly after the cat girl spirit appeared and made a conclusion to Oto and Ren’s story:

Ren actually managed to get Oto on the ghost train at the cost of his own life, only being prevented from fading away by Sumireko saying she still needed him (but she wouldn’t take a bath with him)

But who knows how the manga will change things?

Probably was an in case of emergency ending if the story ever got axed. It's no wonder it lines up with what is happening.

Great chapter, hopefully Ren get find something else to tether him to the world. He should score with Sumire, and get a daughter to replace Oto, gotta hurry tho she isn't getting any younger.
