The giant anachronism here kinda takes away from the story.

I mean, it’s a reality. Shit is like bugs hiding under rocks, whenever you think “oh people can’t be that racist” they really are.

Anyway, good chapter. The whole discussion of barbecue being based in slavery made me think it was gonna delve into soul food, which is its own story

I like how, by this point, all of the anglers he is friends with all know about this manga. I bet there are a few who have also read the translations and get a kick out of their gender bent design

But, man, David sure has a lot of baggage. I guess he was one of those kids who had parents who both look white but apparently some of his ancestors were African American and the genes went recessive and skipped a generation or two. Yes it happens, I had found a story on two non-identical twins who ended up inheriting wildly different ethnic traits and yes both parents look white

EDIT: That ending, did the artist made an old guy a delinquent looking girl??? lmao

They're so racist they claim ownership over something that won't be invented until decades after emancipation?

I assumed that the author jumbled up the date and it was, like, pre-civil rights instead. I could see a really racist guy saying that in like the 1950s

I assumed that he just misremembered that specific detail. Which, y'know, is still pretty silly, considering he bothered researching what a Model T looks like but not the timeline here. But mixing up pre-civil rights and pre-emancipation be much worse. That would completely undercut what's being conveyed. The mangaka is saying that slavery was the law, which is true if the story is in the 1850's but not the 1950's.
Is the point understanding specific cultures and histories, or just getting a vague feel, give or take a century, and spout platitudes?

Truth, but also:
Now you know how the Japanese feel about James Clavell’s “Shogun”

Just to clarify, the series is still on hiatus for me as well. I only worked on this chapter to strictly point out there's a different series that people will probably be interested in. I will proooobably do another chapter when Transit's volume comes out.

There's a few possible interpretations involving the story featured here.

I implied this in a reddit comment but it's not entirely clear if this is a literal made up story told to sensei to make a point, or if it's an actual anecdotal story passed down. The essay columns would normally illuminate this but those are volume only and y'know. As such, he didn't change any details in consideration of the other party's account.

Alternatively he deadass doesn't understand the difference between voluntary indentured servitude and slavery in American history. It's possible, I can't really confirm since I don't really have access to a Japanese library or bookstore at the moment. I do know here in America, I have to go to pretty specific libraries just to find detailed literature of the fucking French Revolution. Not having a full grasp of English would affect him here too.

Finally, this could be an edited version of what he heard meant to drive the point home to his Japanese audience. Japanese views on slavery are pretty strange from an American perspective, as you can tell from most Japanese media that dabble in slavery.
