I've always liked how Murata Mayu writes relationships. She gives the social circles of the main characters faces and identities. The love rival shoujo arc is totally a cliche, but the dynamic between the two friends makes it waaaaay more compelling than it would have been other wise. Not many shoujo mangas place much importance on friendships and how they're just as, if not more, important as romantic relationships.
