in case anyone was curious and actually bothers to check the comments:
the mushroom Matsutake Modoki is presumably related to the Tricholoma family of mushrooms (most specifically Tricholoma Robustrum as that is the irl Matsutake mushroom's designation) but given the "Modoki" tacked on the end it is probably a similar, possibly unique to the island, variant, and while the irl Matsutake mentioned above is not only safe to eat, but even considered a delicacy in some areas, other mushrooms of the Tricholoma family are poisonous and are dangerous to consume. as such we should assume that the Matsutake Modoki of this series could be wildly different due to the island's isolation (and subsequent alternate evolution) and is most likely, as the author claims it to be and contrary to the TL's note, quite poisonous
