Grapeshot was actually a prepared ammunition; musket balls packed into tin cans. They never jammed nails willy-nilly into a cannon; it wouldn't be that effective.

Aside from the use of grapeshot, as pointed out by ericlacasse, there is nothing really to add about this chapter. Everything is about how the events played out that night. Although it is worth pointing out how lucky Bonaparte was. As I wrote in one of the earlier chapters, Bonaparte was connected to the Robespierre brothers. Despite that he managed to avoid the fallout of the Thermidoran Reaction, and now he managed to get into the good graces of Barras, which will propel his career further.
