Next is interrog*ahem*interview on why he is young despite Eclair being known for al least decades and why he knows Japan history. This may be just the past generation of Eclair

I was confused for a bit because I knew a haberdasher to be related to sewing and tailoring supplies specifically. It seems that the term used to refer to any merchant that sold goods that are sold by the measure, rather than by a fixed minimum unit, but that still doesn't seem to quite reach the everything-store peddler concept.

I'd be curious if anyone knows whether this has some particular term in IRL history, or if this is more Aitherian creative liberty.

From what I remember of previous chapters, "Eclair" is more of a position than a person, that's why there are 2 people writing under "Eclair" him and his teacher.

Sohei completely unbothered because he already knew. This is why "Old person knows everything" is one of my favorite tropes

Well at least it ain't Nobunaga
I mean, you say that but he’s right there as the “brutal but innovative ally” with Toyotomi Hideyoshi as “the one who came after”

Strange thing tho is that I pretty sure it was the Oda clan that was holding Ieyasu “hostage” in his youth

I'm just sitting here trying to trace my thought process and media consumption back decades to figure out why I always thought a haberdashery was a hat shop.

Yeah, same here, it was so ingrained that when I was watching the Hateful 8, I kept looking for hats, and even yelled at the screen when watching a react channel watch the movie, when they asked what's a haberdashery. Then I looked it up and saw it was just a sundry goods store, or whatever it is when they just have a wide variety of things to sell.

So about the Ieyasu legend. The old man specified "overeating" tempura. The account supposedly mentioned that Tokugawa Ieyasu found the tempura to be so tasty he ate a lot of it, fell ill, and then died 3 months later. Like, he didn't just eat one small plate and then got sick. He ate multiple portions.

For quite a good long time people thought he died from eating too much, but as mentioned in the chapter, more modern research found that the description of his symptoms matched the condition of stomach cancer patients. It was then concluded that he had had the cancer for a while, and the tempura only aggravated his condition.

Like, he probably really did get a minor stomach ache from eating too much that one day. It just happens to also have a long-term consequence because of the cancer.

Damn dude, they ported the story of Tokugawa Ieyasu...

Thank you for these translations! I finished Isekai Izakaya Nobu a few weeks ago and was taking my time finishing Gen afterwards. They're such fun reads! The same dish, yet cooked differently... Admittedly, I do still prefer Nobu myself. A lot of the characters and their development on the isekai side feel deeply intertwined with Nobu, and on some levels they feel they've familiarized themselves on a significantly more personal level than what we get out of Gen. The political intrigue that's erupting around Aitheria's really got a huge grip on me.

It's a bit funny that despite being the royal capital, Gen at times feels reluctant or resistant to see any deeper political intrigue. I guess it makes sense since Nobu is the main series and this is just the spinoff, but I do like that we can get more of an inkling of the royal capital's culture. I've definitely been enjoying the more down-to-earth tradeoff Gen gets in exchange for a gripping world tale, though.

I don't want to discount Taisho's own struggles in learning to run his business, especially as someone who's striking it out on his own and now mentoring his own chef, but it feels like a much more intimate affair for us to witness two characters on polar opposites of the experience spectrum learn to conduct their own izakaya business. Not to mention how frequently this whole thing being a family business relates to the plot.

I think I go to Nobu to see how Earthly cuisine touches an isekai universe, and I come to Gen to see differently more Earthly people interact with an isekai, I suppose.

but author pls, im begging you, give me shotaro and hinata actually being flirty and engaging with each other as a couple, they don't feel like they've been dating at all the way they act 😭
