I don't know how widespread this actually is in Japan compared to everywhere else.
This is ancedotal, but I'm actually leaning on the idea that this very prevalent Japanese society. Let me explain.
A while ago, I saw how people lauded the story of MGS2 years later and how it essentially "predicted" the events that would later transpire in America after 2010 or so. Then I saw someone point out that the reason Kojima was largely able to nail this so solidly (seewhatididthere) was because
Japan was already living it by ~2000. Being the genius auteur he is, no one saw this of course.
Anyways, I thought about this for a good while... then and it started to make sense.
Japan is one of those countries that is known for being very unique and/or novel for one thing or another: "technology"
as a whole is one of those things. Some of features we take for granted in smartphones today,
Japan already had them by the 90's. Crazy innit? So, with that in mind, if you take a step back and try to think of things more holistically, it may appear as though Japanese society essentially went through technological progress
much faster. All by virtue of simply being innovative. As a result, they experienced unintended consequences much earlier, IMO.
