First, Javelin, I won't say anything about your speculation, but I don't think that's (the back on time thing) what they meant in that dialogue.
So, Swift, I believe it wasn't phrased in the best way, but I think that change in topic was about how Farlin (was her name?) still didn't trust the woman, and Kai assuring her that if she had any plans, they wouldn't have returned on time. Since Farlin was probably going to say something like "Yeah the trust of the soldiers is growing but that woman's still suspicious." and Kai guessed what she was going to say, and meant "even if she's still suspicious, would Jeanne have come back on time if she was an immediate enemy?" also explaining Farlin's avoidance of the question at the end.
