its always funny to me when series that feature human characters that murder for work treat it as like, exceptionally bad when demons kill humans and eat them like,,, honestly its worse if you don't eat them, what are u killing ppl for? fun?? like this guy doesn't even like murder and he still does it at least the tengu is getting nutrients out of it

Kill that guy!

@sleepyknight
Isn't it funny how soldiers will go to war and shoot people who are shooting at them but if a serial killer murders a defenseless victim and feeds it to them they get all upset? 🤔

@Guyincongnitous, yeah war is fucked up. ,,, literally its feudal japan what do you think they fought and killed people for? the right to vote? ppl fought bc rich landowners decided they wanted more land so u went and killed someone just like you who had a whole family just like you for that rich guy bc he owned yalls farm and u needed to eat. thats how war worked under the feudal system like,,,, u were a peasant, u got drafted, u killed a bunch of people and u went back to being a peasant so u could put food in ur belly.

this dude just cut out the middle man. the main reason hes killing off humans (which the mc is also literally alive to do, hes staying alive so he can kill like, specific people) is so he can protect the land he needs to fill his belly. where would he be without that land, on the streets killing for food bc he couldn't walk into the unemployment office! hes a tengu!

like, thats literally what im critiquing, the dichotomy your trying to construct doesn't exist bc in both cases the motivations (which are equally present and stated to be exactly the same!) are implicitly tied to the characters survival, one party is just constructed as being more alien and therefore less sympathetic. But if we look at what he does and says and why he does and says those things its like, yeah! this whole manga is about people like this doing things like this, the tengu isn't even exceptional in his inhumanity

None of that means all measures of empathy or principles go out the window you edgelord.
Do you think people formed communities and societies cause everyone went around being okay with murdering each other? Even at were people are adverse to killing each other. Unless they're sociopaths which the MC clearly is not.
Your "critique" makes no sense because your views about killing, the people who do it and why are comically childish.

@Guyincongnitous, im not really critiquing the concept of murder as a crime im critiquing a plot element which is used to make people class a character as sympathetic or unsympathetic. like you could also say im critiquing war but i dont see how thats particularly edgelord-y? if you read my responses youll never once see me say murder isn't bad so idg why ur acting like im pro-killing. if anything the problem with what im saying is that its too anti-murder in that i feel that its just as wrong for humans to kill other humans.

anyway re: the manga itself the guy in this case isnt killing for kicks hes doing it to keep people off of the land that he uses for subsistence farming. historically motivations like that have lead to conflicts between groups of people that have resulted in deaths, what would you call those? would you consider them ethically condonable or not? thats the crux of the argument i was making in both comments which would be that the tengu in this case is virtually indistinguishable from any person who's killed for similar reasons and therefore not as unsympathetic as his "monstrous" category might have led readers to believe

regardless the manga as a whole seems p sympathetic to him and hes presented as being the same sort of guy as the protag so ig that sort of critique would apply more to something like inuyasha where despite being shown to be the same as humans in terms of intelligence and motivations youkai are killed indiscriminately unless they 1) look human or 2)have human ancestry whereas the murder taboo is upheld even for murderous humans. this manga's portrayal is more obviously nuanced but still in the vein of something like princess mononoke where humans and more supernatural elements are portrayed as fundamentally irreconcilable. Even so, i dont really think that sort of dynamic holds here bc the youkai we're seeing here are literally just bigass people rather than a metaphor for like pre industrial society or the unpredictability of the natural world
