I'm personally ambivalent about continuing to read this tho...just not grabbing me outside of the initial setup

Paywalls and things like that essentially mean the manga isn't translated to me, unless it's an official translation site. I'd say go for it!

Sometimes I wish authors would at least study or be into the topic they are into. Like this is the saddest and overly pretentious chess match there is. I missed the times when board game manga would go into details on moves and the opponents back and forth with the protags. The mind games. All of that.
Instead we have this cringe scene that feels sloppy. Where the protag just wins and give advice we don't even see, or know how such a board state began, and ended or what lead up to her giving advice in the first place.

It is a very tiring cliche, ever since the first time I remember it occurring all the way when Code Geass first aired, where he was playing with some noble and just cuts to him winning to show that he is some unparallel genius. All chess has become in anime is just a way to flex on the MC's big brained ego.
