You only need to do that yourself if the kittens are orphaned in the first couple weeks. The mother usually takes care of “potty training”.

It isn't rare for some people to abandon baby kittens on the streets or in some alley because they don't know what to do with them; also the classic stuff a bag full of baby cats and kill them that way...
