The dad should probaly reconsider his career choice in life.

Work away from your family so much that you don't even live with them anymore.

Is it even worth it at that point?
honestly it depends on person to person
On one hand : you can travel new places and live there and see new things while having a home there
on the other :you lose almost every bit of connection you ever have and just sort get used to it at one point
Plus jobs like this also pay well (as far as i know) so while the dad may get to spend time with the family it does kick the budget so it really depends

I always wondered which jobs demand constant moving
  • Consulting (e.g. technology, software)
  • Corporate (regional heads, management)
  • Construction, oil/gas, infrastructure
  • Research/science (fieldwork)
  • Diplomats
  • Military/security
Basically roles where you have very specialized knowledge, skills, or expertise that is hard to build or find, and there is very high demand for it, but not necessarily for a consistently long period of time in one specific location.

A bit more extreme than moving cross-country but the country I came from doesn't really have that many high paying jobs so it's not uncommon for one parent to work overseas to send the money back home. It's to the point that labour could be considered to be one of the largest export's of that nation. My own mother nearly did the same but realized that she'd value seeing me and my sibling growing up more. Thankfully we've since moved here but it's a damn tough sacrifice I greatly respect.

Also, based mother.

Think its pretty fair for pops to live alone a year. His kid has literally deassociated with social connections because he feels it impossible to make any lasting connections with constant moving. He's finally found a connection he doesn't want to sever. Especially this late in his life.
