This is a great example of Ichido just making shit up, regardless of how small. Oliva never had old bare-knuckle boxing experience nor is that the reason his skin is so tough. The anime shows that he just rubs his skin with salt to toughen it because apparently old bare-knuckle boxers did it for the same reason.
