Ahaha, you can really see the influence of western cartoons on Japanese manga back then. It's funny how it's the opposite now.

Tamura is an interesting example in this regard, because he's part of something like a second wave of post-war manga artists that grew up with Western-influenced manga, but he's also stated that he was taking in influences from Western art and illustrations too. E.g. Jean-Michel Folon's surrealist paintings, as well as William Steig's and Saul Steinberg's illustration work for the New Yorker magazine.
