She was dead dead. Brain functions ceased and the only thing keeping her alive was the medical equipment, however even that wasn't going to last as her body would shut down completely within a few days. Hajime made the decision to not prolong it and end her suffering because he was a kid at the time and didnt truely understand what he was doing until after it was already done. All he was thinking at the time was that he didnt want his sister to be suffering anymore.


That aside this is where everything changes in their relationship as Hajime begins to realize his feelings. However they do not get together until winter when Chinatsu's father attempts to take Chinatsu away by force while her mother is in the hospital due to overwork and stress. Hajime saves her then and they properly become a couple.

It wasn't cancer or any terminal illness It was an accident that immediately killed his parents but left the sister in an unrecoverable state where she was slowly dying. The choice was left in his hands since he was the only living relative the doctors could get their hands on to make the decision. His uncle was overseas and couldn't be contacted at the time. His uncle loves their family and worked really hard to help Hajime when he found out what had happened.

that's basically what happened. truck driver fell asleep and crashed into a car. parents died immediately, sis was alive when rescue arrived, but detoriated in hospital and was brain dead, but still hooked to all the machines. MC was given choice to either keep her as-is, and she'd die to heart failure in next few days, or stop life support. he decided to end it because she seemed to be in pain. tbh i doubt they'd give that choice to a kid irl


I highly recommend novel, 2 LN and additional 2 WN volumes are translated (and translation is actually decent). First 2 are mostly about main couple, then we get into other people (and their problems and romances) around them - and the other characters are actually just as interesting and fleshed out as MCs, instead of being usual filler.
Outcomes are probably a little too predictable, but everyone is connected in some way to someone else, making it a big graph of sometimes unpredictable and unusual relationships.

Spoiler: Spoilers, A lot of 'em

His parents are dead. Mc stayed at home while his parents and his sister went on a trip and got into a car accident. Parents died on the spot and his sister was in the vegetative state untill all of the brain functions stopped. That's when he was asked whether to "pull the plug early", since she only had a few days left before she completely died. Mc, not wanting his sister to suffer any longer, decided to "end it early". That "ikeman" we saw this chapter was the """friend""" mc shared his story with, trying to find some kind of solace, but the guy backstabbed him by spreading rumors that he "killed his own sister with his own hands".

This felt like an accurate response to a traumatic situation, given the implied history between Hajime and the dude and the hinted-at events of Hajime's past.

I would argue this was very much not the 'usual spineless MC situation' that admittedly is somewhat commonplace in manga.
