Highserk did not start the war but they are seen as the agressors because they responded to the equivalent of a poke in the ass with a nuke. Highserk WILL use the slightest excuse for conflict. It was Myard that was the orignal aggressor and Highserk had been at a standstill with Libertoa for years so it was a chance for them to get some dubs since Myard was weak and bordered a very strategically important lake. the 2 nations beyond Myard, Ferrius and Cryst didn't like this so they all ganged up on Highserk. Plus Myard was originally a duchy of the empire and the former king, father of rita, defected because of greed. Highserk may be war hungry monsters but they are the most based nation in this region of the world for reasons you will see. The other nations are cowards and idiots with the exception of Libertoa who are snakes. HIGHSERK HIGHSERK HIGHSERK

This was a good example of why you shouldn't over do anything, if they had stopped at just killing Walm's buddies he'd have just taken the L and head home, he has said many times he understands war isn't personal and it wasn't the first time he lost friends in battle, but now they made it personal.

I don't remember it being written anywhere in the manga that Myard where the aggressors and they responded in kind
