I don't remember it being written anywhere in the manga that Myard where the aggressors and they responded in kind
IIRC, the Myard King used scorched earth tactics when he retreated to Ferrius. Highserk had to step in and feed the people that were left behind. This lead to militias of former Myard citizens easily volunteering for the war effort. After Walm killed the Ferrius General (the King's brother with the brains), there was a scene with the King being killed by said militia members.

This series sure is something. At the same time that, Highserk is in the wrong since it's a war of conquest they started (at least as far as I remember) going out of your way to massacre everyone and desecrate the corpses of the foot soldiers that have no say in how the country moves is something that isn't exactly going to earn you any friends.
Oh well, as they say, there are no "good guys" in a war.

War and Conquest is based because you get to kill and destroy people that desecrate dead bodies. Highserk is in the right and all of the nonbelievers should burn in the blue flames of Highserk.

This was a good example of why you shouldn't over do anything, if they had stopped at just killing Walm's buddies he'd have just taken the L and head home, he has said many times he understands war isn't personal and it wasn't the first time he lost friends in battle, but now they made it personal.
This. War is war. Soldiers are soldiers, blame the leaders. But, with that disrespect for the dead. Damn. It’s personal.

Pretty sure this is not how we should tell the story. It said that the Kanoa kingdom was pressuring Highserk's borders by amassing troops, making Highserk want to invade them. Then the part of the new king of Myard happened, and then Highserk invaded the ex-Kanoa lands aiming for Myard. At least that's what I'm reading. Highserk isn't entering those lands to feed the people in there. It literally said "Highserk also lacked the troops and postponed the invasion until now" in chapter 1

Just to be fair, I can see how the mangaka is trying to portray both sides. The Highserk are a belligerent state, war is their business so they have "standards", which can be seen when Walm's captain stopped some new recruits from raping and pillaging since that "ain't cool", they are so good at that that the other side had to form an alliance to be able to hold out.

The other side of the fight aren't used to war and the only reason they are still holding out is because of sheer numbers and thanks to the few Hero level characters they have, and after finally having a victory after being curbstomped so far they let their emotions loose on the enemy soldiers, which helps morale by boosting camaraderie and dehumanizing the enemy, it just so happens that in this case the cons are going to outweigh the pros of doing that.

True, humans do have it easier when the thing they’re killing isn’t ‘human’ to them.

But, you know it’ll bite you in the ass when you make grudges. Highserk sees war as usual, nothing personal and are used to it.

But ecetra ecetra

Not this again. Read the beginning of the manga again

I hope not too, however i think with the vaccum left by berserk when the mangaka died that a lot of publishers realized that they can fill this gap, and that there is a huge market for this stuff.

hence why we are seeing more and more grimdark lately.
Do you now? I see barely any new grimdark fantasy lately. Got any recommendations?
