Possibly just a bad adaptation, story doesn't seem to be very well suited for the manga format. I also don't feel like the grim and grittyness of war show through much since mc is sorta just fine after every battle as well as any other important character (first few chapters). The art is graphic but the only actual challenge to the mc is that he doesn't like killing but he has to since he's got no other way to survive apparently. It doesn't feel like he struggles much in battles, he just is OP with little explanation (maybe because manga). Enemies get brutally massacred and the mc goes "boohoo I don't like killing."

I can't read raws so no idea. It was so good. I assume it was sales. JP has bias for bishoujo after all.
I guess JP otakus put their money on Alya who speaks Russian, which has the same year of release as this manga.
