If I remembered correctly, someone said that in the novel JSDF's reason to keep pressing on eventhough they're surrendering was not because it is an unknown gesture. JSDF knew they're surrendering but they ignored their pleas. Remembering the cruel execution of the Japanese citizens in Fenn, they went Imperial Japan all over again
