What a fabulously creepy detail to have the utsurobune monster base its appearance on bloated drowned corpses. Really surprised by the memo implying it came back with a perfected human imitation and got adopted by the EIC as her younger sister, though. I thought the emotional conclusion from Inubousaki that Shun should treasure the memory of her departed mother and older sister instead of overwriting it with fakes was sweet, but I guess Shun went for a liberal interpretation of the sentiment... lol. Can't say I hate how warped that would be.

I somehow picked up the wrong interpretation and assumed EIC had a daughter and is pretending that she is a sister. What you mentioned makes way more sense.

I like how the notes on Gerai are appropriately inaccurate.

Like the inspiration for Gerai was clearly anglerfish and frogfish, but Kariyasu Tokuda is probably not someone who would have ever seen those guys, so she's just like, "yeah it's sorta like a frog and a fish???"

From 1999 to 2023 ("the present") means the "younger sister" is around 24, so just a little older than you'd be fresh out of college. Why would she accept a sea monster as her little sister though, she never even had one in the first place?
