Like, there are less people back then, and less things in their hand. In grandma’s time, she’s probably home schooled by her own parents and relatives, for the duties she is supposed to do for the future. Friends would also be from the inner circle of relatives in-the-know, everyone is relatively in a clear position, or know what came with the Asama name. They have time to focus on the job, and it’s their learning to survive these creatures when they’re adults.

Hiro didn’t have such luxury. He got school, and other people around ridiculing him.
Too much things in hand, too much ideas to worry about.
So grandma just think “well, a little busier, but I also often have to push myself back then, so he should be too"

Also, after time, the older people probably don’t feel as deep anymore about their peers who did fail the natural selection back then.

I got the opposite impression from Granny. "I'm sorry, I knew you had a strong sense of responsibility yet I..." - She just wanted Hiro to keep an eye on his sister and try to keep her in the house, not make it his whole life.

Probably the latter, but also we've seen that the particulars of physics is kinda wack when it comes to embodied spirits in this series.
