There's some things about Kanamori Souichi that are absolutely infuriating. Having faked his blindness is near the top of that list. Still, when I see Wagatsuma pull up to protect them, I think about that chapter where they both caught a beatdown together and Sou took that shit like man (probably the last remarkable thing he's done) so Wagatsuma protecting him makes a lot of sense.

My question is: in the timeline before Gaku's timeslip, how did they find out about Kanamori's eye, if they even did at all throughout the events of high school?

They didn't. Kanamori fucking bailed before due to losing Wagatsume (because Waga thought he was abandoned by his dad, AGAIN). Kana left the city and only returned after he was an adult.
