I also thought about same thing. Probably as rare dragon people member Karen had something very rare and valuable like dragon scale or something(in the flashback it's some kind of orb). So when she deafened party and was overwhelmed by monster this guy instead of helping her had just steal that thing and left her to die.
As for party members I think they represent features more likes these:
Nick- sincerity, was cast away because his party leader preferred thief than him. Weakness: was blindly in love, also maybe idols?
Tiaana- love, was betrayed by her fiance. Weakness: hazard.
Karen- trust, was betrayed and left for dead. Weakness: food.
Sem- kindness, he took care of children, but was falsely accused. Weakness: well prostitutes.
Also I don't think any of them will be revealed as evil later (so Tiaana isn't lying) on as they are supposed to be that band of misfits that will save the world.
Wonder if that idol will show up later on in the story, because she seems like big character and rather good one.
